Timber Maintenance Tips for Hot, Dry Weather

Keep Your Wood Looking Great All Summer Long When summer hits with high heat and dry conditions, timber structures (whether they’re decks, pergolas, fences, or exposed beams) can take a beating. Without proper care, even the most beautifully crafted timber can crack, warp, or fade under the sun’s intense rays.

At Timber Kings Carpentry & Building, we believe your woodwork should stand strong and beautiful for generations. Here are our expert tips to keep your timber in top condition during hot, dry weather:

1.  Inspect for Dry Cracks and Shrinkage

Dry air pulls moisture from wood, especially if it’s untreated or poorly sealed. Look for: • Hairline cracks (called checking) • Loose joints or shifting beams • Small gaps where boards meet Tip: Walk around your property every few weeks during peak heat and check all visible wood—especially on the sunniest sides of your home.

2.  Clean Before You Seal

Dust, pollen, and mildew can settle on your timber over spring and early summer. Before applying any new sealant or oil, clean the surface thoroughly.

How to clean:

• Use a gentle wood cleaner or a mix of water + mild soap

• Scrub with a soft-bristle brush

• Rinse with a hose (never high-pressure)

3.  Reapply Protective Finishes

Sealing your timber is the most important step to protect against sun and heat damage.

For outdoor wood in dry climates, we recommend:

• UV-resistant oil-based sealers for natural finishes

• Semi-transparent stains for color and deeper UV protection

Rule of thumb: Reapply every 1–2 years depending on sun exposure and wear.

4.  Choose the Right Wood for the Climate

If you’re building new, select timber species that naturally resist drying out:

• Cedar – naturally resists warping and sun damage

• Douglas Fir – strong and stable when properly sealed

• Redwood – ideal for dry, hot areas

Our team can recommend the best species for your region and project.

5.  Shade Matters

Whenever possible, design with shade in mind. Shade not only protects your timber, but also keeps outdoor living spaces cooler and more comfortable.

Quick wins:

• Install timber pergolas with climbing plants

• Use overhangs or awnings above exposed timber features

• Consider light-coloured finishes to reflect heat

6.  Tighten Hardware and Check Joints

Dry heat can cause timber to shift slightly. Bolts, screws, and joinery may loosen over time.

Maintenance checklist:

• Tighten all fasteners on decks, fences, and furniture • Check for joint movement in timber frames or beams

• Reapply wood glue or filler where needed

7.  Schedule a Professional Inspection

If you’re unsure how your timber is holding up—or it’s been more than 2 years since your last treatment—call in a pro.
